Suppose that is true, for purposes of argument. (I do not concede it). Does that mean we should take a favorable attitude to ideological fanaticism and its fruits? Are we paralyzed forever from opposing evil because evil occurred in our history? Had I been at Buchenwald, I would be pretty grateful Americans were not paralyzed by scruples, and came to liberate the camps. Were I a Pole or Ukrainian, dependent on Radio Free Europe and glad to see pressure put on the Soviet Regime on behalf of trade unions or the free exercise of religion, I would be glad that Americans were not morbidly fixated on the bad things in their past.......
