Well, I would have the same question. It is very difficult to get reliable evidence, I would imagine. One of the reason for the assumption of a particularly large concentration of Indians in Meso- America is the fact that some of them did aggregate in cities, among the Aztecs and Myans, which suggests both population density and the achievement of a surplus economy. Given that some of the tribes further north were fairly civilized, for example, the Iroquois, it is difficult to see how they would not have emulated the "urban" tribes had they had the population to support intensive agriculture and the diversion of manpower to public works.........
