Marxism, at its core, sought to end oppression imposed upon the masses (most people) by an indifferent wealthy elite and a religious hierarchy that was the puppet of these powers, so was by definition democratic - popular, of the people.

Marxism can theoretically be democratic but it is not democratic at its core. It is not an effort for an equal say but rather an effort for redistribution of, and central control over wealth and the factors of production. This could be imposed by a democratic vote, or by forcibly imposing the orders of a communist party leadership on an indifferent or even hostile people. Besides even if it was democratic, democracies can and have done evil things, so it would not mean that comunism is not evil.
