Re: Path to 3G (Broadband Mobile Wireless)

Slacker- Excellent answer to my questions. In just a few Q&A postings I'm able to get a much better grasp of the mobile wireless migration path to broadband than hours upon hours of reading would get me. I'm sure others on this thread are also benefiting in the same way. You bring up some intriguing comments that'll I'll do even another follow-up on soon. Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)

"I have begun reading reports of operators beginning to run out of spectrum in Europe. If true, it would only hasten the move to W-CDMA....it will provide at least 3x-4x the amount of voice capacity as GSM."

slacker- Well that's interesting piece of news.

elamatador- Do you know of any problems of this nature regarding running out of spectrum for voice services in Europe?

"The entire wireless world will be closely watching the May W-CDMA rollout by NTT Docomo..."

I take it that the NTT Docomo 3G rollout will not benefit Qualcomm. Am I right about this?

And considering that more people access the Internet in Japan via i-mode and it reflects zero resemblance to the lack of success of WAP services in the US, why will it be so important to watch? I didn't quite understand if you comment was a technology type comment or a subscriber success type comment.

Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)

slacker- Jumping ahead with a couple more questions.

I take it that HDR is Qualcomm's answer to W-CDMA. Is this accurate? And in your opinion, is it accurate to assume that for an operator to upgrade from CDMA2000 1XRTT to HDR is about as simply for an operator to go from CDMAOne to CDMA2000. In other words, not a forklift upgrade to get in the neighborhood of 2Mbps.

I take it your basic gist for being a proponent of Qualcomm's CDMAOne to CDMA2000 to CDMA HDR migration path is one of an economical track from narrowband mobile voice all the way up to broadband mobile services. Whereas a GSM operator on the way to broadband mobile voice has to do forklift upgrades after the initial GPRS rollout is complete. Is this somewhat accurate? Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)
