Equity woes boost forex interest

Meanwhile, those in the currency risk management business are seeing more interest from funds keen to improve performance as times get tougher in equity markets.

"Currency overlay is one business which is continuing to grow and we expect to grow with it and increase our market share in terms of the currency overlay providers we service," Brian Crowe, managing director of Royal Bank of Scotland Financial Markets, told Reuters.

And it is not just funds who are looking to get the experts to manage currency risk for them.

As firms around the world get bigger, or at least have to think increasingly beyond national borders to stay in the race, there is a growing demand for someone to manage currency risk.

"We are hearing from a broader variety of fund managers than the typical pension funds who hire us while corporate treasurers who have been devoting resources to managing foreign exchange want to wash their hands of it," said Harriett Richmond, managing director and head of FX management at JP Morgan Investment Management in London.
