JDS Uniphase and Alcatel Optronics Extend Successful Collaboration on 980-nm Pumps for Underseas Optical Networks
High Power and High Reliability Combine to Enable the Next Generation Of HighBandwidth Undersea Systems to Meet the Demands of Increasing Internet Traffic
OTTAWA (Nepean), Ontario, SAN JOSE, Calif. and PARIS, March 14

/PRNewswire/ -- JDS Uniphase Corporation (Nasdaq: JDSU - news; Toronto: JDU - news) and
Alcatel Optronics (Nasdaq: ALAO; Paris: CGO) announced today that they have
reached an agreement to extend the supply of 980-nm laser chips and pump
stabilizers manufactured by the former SDL to Alcatel Optronics through the
year 2003. These 980-nm chips are used in pump modules manufactured by Alcatel
Optronics for use in undersea fiber optic networks. The decision to extend
the agreement follows the successful joint qualification and production of the
new laser diode, the latest generation of high power 980-nm pump chips. This
device, when packaged in Alcatel Optronics' Submarine Qualified Pump Module
package, provides 200 mw of reliable power in the harsh undersea environment.
Alcatel Optronics' 980-nm pumps are designed to operate with extremely low
failure rates over a service lifetime of more than 25 years.
According to Gregory P. Dougherty, Chief Operating Officer of JDS Uniphase's Amplification and Transmission Business Group, ``Our partnership with Alcatel Optronics has provided cutting-edge solutions to respond to the explosive demand for bandwidth in the undersea network market segment. This rapid growth, along with the technical challenges associated with the market for undersea optical components, requires a high level of close collaboration. We believe the extension of this agreement will allow us to continue to work together to meet our customers' need for more bandwidth with high quality and high performance products manufactured at volume production levels.''

``This is a win-win situation as both Alcatel Optronics and JDS Uniphase are leaders in their fields of expertise,'' said Philippe Bregi, Chief Operating Officer of Alcatel Optronics. ``As the world leader in packaged submarine pumps, Alcatel Optronics will continue to benefit from its close collaboration with JDS Uniphase by enlarging its submarine customer base and continuing to satisfy the need for highly reliable, leading-edge technology.''

larry, I think we've bottomed out for now. I think we bottomed
out Mon at between 3 and 4 PM and we will retest this AM
and I agree we will come back.
Everybody was looking at Naz 1800-1900 but it is difficult to
be so precise. And also everybody can't get in at
the same time at 1800-1900 , which is why people jumped the gun yesterday at 1950.Let em have the last 50 points.

We've had a long drawn recession. Difficult to see
" a washout ", like in the past because of trading collars.
I think we've had since April 2000.We've had a washout as
far as I am concerned. PEs are of relative importance.
Early on in a recovery they are going to be high because
of low earnings. That is when you buy. Later , PEs come down
as earnings go up.That is when you sell, in cyclicals which is what
IT is these days in some ways.

I am optimistic because of
-surplus
-balanced budget
-Bush will cut fat and spending
-powerful technology
-a great country
-no recession in sight per Merrill and I agree:
look around: everybody is working
-we are at the early stages of a powerful optical and IT
revolution and we are the leaders.
-Bush will control Health care. For example no need
to "lock " " Gazillions....600+ bill.," for " Medicare "
for the future. A lot of that is to pay for expensive
funerals. Stop it.
-no need for drug plan except for needy.
-Time to sell the Dow & oil and buy the Nasdaq,
IMHO
