What message do we send to society when we pat murderers on the back, say it's not that bad, and let them live in prison?

And as to the deterrence factor of capital punishment and punishment in general, it worked for me and many others. Perhaps it's false to say punishment does not deter given the huge numbers who do not commit crime. I know, it's best to interview the criminal and hear him spout he didn't fear punishment and swallow it as gospel. Perhaps this is just a defense mechanism they have when they are too embarrassed to admit they were stupid and got caught. (Blasphemy, sorry ;))

The victim was deprived of life

Sorry, your argument is not consistent. Not only are all criminals not deprived of what they took from their victims, but all crimes that result in death are not punished by, or even eligible to be punished by execution.

This morning in a town nearby, a driver with a history of DUI, under pursuit at high speed, plowed through an intersection and killed another driver.

He deprived that driver of life, is totally culpable. Should he be fried?
