Startup costs, my friend. Same reason autoworkers can't go out and start their own car companies.

Yeah, why doesn't some brave group do that? Oops, they already have - The two largest unions at United Airlines bought the company several years ago. Anybody want to buy an airline, cheap?

And raided pension funds? How about some of the big national union's (Teamsters?) honcho's caught raiding the cookie jar for themselves. All the thieves are not "company" people.
