sure, the CB's will try to stop a rally once it eventuates...but the stock piles are really very small compared to the amount of fiat money in circulation, which has really exploded. so it's going to be very difficult to successfully combat a surge in investment demand.

consider that three US banks alone hold more in gold derivatives than the treasury holds in bullion...which in turn equates to about three years worth of production. too much has been consumed over the years because of the artificially depressed price, and no new exploration has taken place...as Hathaway mentions, production is actually set to begin to decline in coming years because of that...while demand has just hit fresh records last year.
