There are some VERY GOOD reasons for Greenspeak to take action...

<<1:00PM ET Continued weakness in the U.S. equity markets due to concerns over the banking situation in Japan. Nineteen banks were placed on Rating Watch Negative by Fitch this morning and the equity markets aren't a place investors want to be. Not surprisingly, the 30-year bond is stronger today and the Yen is weaker as a consequence of financial uncertainty in Japan. The broader question for investors is whether prospective instability in Japan might result in loan losses and/or derivitive losses for U.S. financial istitutions with exposure to the troubled Japanese banks. This fear is driving extreme sell pressure in financials which are leading the markets lower. Today's activity leaves the door open for the Fed to ease more aggressively and serious talk of a 75 basis point cut are once again beginning to surface. The Dow is trading with curbs in under the key level of 10,000. The Nasdaq is also weak with the index under 2,000. XOI -1.4%, S&P Midcap 400 -1.3%, DJTA -4.1%, DJUA -1.8%, Nasdaq 100 -3.2%, SOX -2.6%, Russell 2000 -1.3%, NYSE Adv/Dec 757/2191, Nasdaq Adv/Dec 988/2585>>

Best Regards,

Scott

BTW, a few years from now when this storm is behind us some new things will be written about Greenspan. It is possible that the last chapter of his legacy may not be pretty. Then again, I could be wrong...=)
