It is curious that although Nextel seems to be making public comments that they are transitioning to 1x, they have not "publicly" announced it. Who will be making the chips for the 1x sets? At this point, I guess it would have to be Qualcomm, because as far as I know nobody else (including Motorola) has a 1x chip. By mid 2002, however, maybe Motorola will have a 1x chip and if so, would Nextel probably use it? It would be interesting to see what would happen if analysts started incorporating future revenue streams from a Nextel adoption of 1x in their revenue models.
