Subscribers to xDSL Service in Japan More Than Double to 34,000 in February
March 14, 2001 (TOKYO) -- The number of subscribers in Japan to digital subscriber line (xDSL) service extended more than double in February to reach 34,372 at the end of the month.

The figure was revealed in a recent survey conducted by the Ministry of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications.

The subscribers totaled 16,194 as of the end of January. The rapid growth in the number of subscribers is attributed mainly to the fact that the providers of asymmetric DSL (ADSL) service expanded their service areas. ADSL is one type of xDSL technology.

Venture companies, such as Tokyo Metallic Communications Corp. and eAccess Ltd., already have entered the ADSL business using telephone lines owned by NTT's two regional operators. Moreover, NTT's two regional operators also are providing ADSL service.

Comparing the combined number of subscribers to the services provided by NTT's two regional companies with those of other companies, NTT's regional companies accounted for 7,948 of the 34,372 subscribers at the end of February, and the other xDSL venture companies, 26,424. As for the market share, NTT's regional companies accounted for 23 percent, and the xDSL ventures, 77 percent.

At the end of January, NTT's regional companies accounted for 10 percent, and xDSL ventures, 90 percent. This means that NTT's regional operators rapidly increased their number of subscribers in just one month in February. They started full-fledged ADSL service in December 2000. NTT's regional operators are likely to catch up with other xDSL ventures in the future.

While Japan's xDSL market is expanding rapidly, the gap between eastern and western Japan remains wide. A breakdown of the subscribers to xDSL service by region showed that there were 27,596 subscribers in eastern Japan, and 6,776 in western Japan as of the end of February.

Asked about the reason for the small number of subscribers to xDSL service in western Japan, an official of the Ministry said, "The fact that CATV Internet service, which is competing with xDSL, is widespread in western Japan, may be one of the reasons. But it is not certain."

NTT West Corp. said, "There are not many subscribers in western Japan, probably because the xDSL service area has yet to be expanded there."

"The xDSL companies in western Japan are currently on the way to expand the service area. So the gap between eastern and western Japan must be narrowed in the future," he added.

The percentage of users in western Japan to all users in the country increased from 17 percent as of the end of January to 20 percent as of the end of February.
