Merrill sees 'climax' coming

Christine Callies, chief U.S. investment strategist at Merrill Lynch, told clients in a research note that she thinks "we are seeing many key ingredients for a selling climax in the next few days." She said one prominent characteristic is the concern that a financial system "dysfunction" would lead to a liquidity freeze, which would in turn encourage global central banks to begin supporting the financial markets. Earlier, rating agency Fitch placed 19 Japanese banks on "negative" watch, and Goldman Sachs lowered estimates for a number of European banks.
