Dogs are what make life worth living (and I have kids and grandkids, who are o.k., too). We have two golden retrievers, Scarlett and Melanie. They are sisters that we got as pups. The only things they know are absolute love, joy, and loyalty. When we first got them, our vet said to try to keep them apart, cause if we didn't, they would bond with each other instead of us. What a crock! She had no conception of the infinite love they have to spare for anyone and everyone. They never sleep or rest except all entwined with each other. Whenever we notice one licking the other, we know there is an ear infection or a sore brewing. The thing they want most in the world is just to be nearby to us. If we go to the living room to watch a movie, they come along within minutes, one after the other, asking to join us. We squeeze over for the one, and then the next. We have a big house, and here are the four of us jammed "shoulder-to shoulder" on the one couch, their heads in our laps. If we go out to the store for an hour, when we come home we get the same exuberant greeting, plenty of licks, jumping, furious tail-wagging, as if we'd just come back from Europe. Right now I'm at my computer, my wife is at hers, and we've each got a dog at our feet. We bought a king-size bed so they could sleep with us. They keep their same exact positions, always, in the middle, top and bottom, heads resting on our legs. They get into mischief at times (like chewing up my socks), but when our kids are here they will put up with any amount of being jumped upon, having ears or tails pulled, with never a sign of annoyance. People who don't have dogs don't understand any of this. That dogs truly are deep, with their own little personality quirks, their individual fears and special joys, their daily routines. They greet every new day with absolute joy that lasts right up til bedtime. What they don't know anything about, are emotions such as anger or depression. To them, life is just worth living, every second of every day. To tell you the truth, I've learned more about life and how you should live it, and about what is important and what isn't, from these two dogs, than from any human being I've ever known. And another thing I've learned is that you can tell a hell of a lot about people based on whether they like dogs or not.
