Fred:

Yes the time frame for service roll out is 2002-2003, but they'll presumably be starting on network upgrades this year ahead of handset sales and service roll out next year. And the last thing I'd seen was that NXTL was considering 1X, Donohue today made it clear that's the route they're going, and twice he emphasized the "incredible" and "unbelievable" voice capacity increases they will derive from 1X deployment. We heard the same thing from China Unicom this last week - they're going 2G CDMA because of the efficient use of spectrum in providing voice capacity.

The more the tide turns QCOM's way, the bigger the future chipset and royalty revenues, and the more other carriers will start wondering how they're going to compete. The economies of the 1X upgrade path are what QCOM has been emphasizing recently in its presentations. Donohue was particularly scathing of AWE's wireless "strategy". I liked that.
