otherwise my LEAPS will be worthless (but I only have about 8% of my assets in LEAPS anyway).

Only? That seems like a lot to me.

LOL: <<So far you have been semi-fortunate: you also have to make sure to reenter before we get back to where you bailed: do you think you have the timing and courage to do that?>>

Uuum... yes, I think I'll have lots of courage (and cash) on an uptrend that leads to more than a 3 bagger.

<<Although my gut-feeling is that this downturn may be the nastiest ever>>

We agree fully!

<<there are plenty around to tell you that you really are the idiot>>

Don't I know it. I've been called an Idiot all the way from July by a few of the planets lesser lights, and some of my friends too... but it goes with the territory.

<<because my goal is for 3/14/11, and nothing that I would want to survive can keep my tech portfolio in the toilet for ten years>>

Same here. But in this climate I chose utilities & infrastructure 'cause we REALLY need those.

<<I'm hoping that the recovery kicks in mid-year>>

Me too, but I expect these hopes to be dashed, since the hoping of this started in Dec and now half-way there we are farther away. Strong current. So while hoping, I am betting against it. If I am right, I gain. If I am wrong, I gain but not as much... unless something evil happens, in which case all bets are off. I like bets that are difficult to lose.

The old addage "you can't invest in a bear market" is something to keep tickling the neurons with.
