i'm not sure why one tries to go long a bear market if one really believes it to be a bear.

I don't see why people have a difficult time with this. Bear markets have always been characterized as having counter trend rallies just the same as bull markets have corrections. These are short term powerful rallies that are separate from the longer term view.

The difference, as I see it, is that the CTR's have the potential of being more identifiable because of the technical indicators pointing out oversold conditions. But corrections are driven more by news events which are not predictable. So, to my way of thinking, the patterns that are part of a bear market are somewhat more predictable. Of course, there is no certainty that the market will respond to the indicators.
