The Chinese language I.T. Kai, Super Boy that hit bookstores and newspaper stands this week is a compilation of 90-plus jokes and comic strips poking fun at the son of Cheung Kong (Holdings) tycoon Li Ka-shing. On the cover is a cartoon character wearing a superhero outfit flying through a thunderstorm. On his chest is a figure 8 insignia instead of the usual S for Superman. The number 8 is commonly known to investors as PCCW Hong Kong Telecom's stock code on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. There has been mounting criticism of Richard Li from disgruntled PCCW shareholders since the stock price plummeted from a high of $27 this time last year to below $4. Yesterday it closed at $4.05. A vast majority of the jokes, which have been collated over the past six months, focus on PCCW's falling stock value as well as Richard Li's passion for Internet development. Other stories highlight the relationship between I.T. Kai (IT Guy), his father and a couple known as the Tungs. Subculture Limited, publishers of the book and also two previous books - Silly Old Tung and its sequel Silly Old Mrs Tung - have printed 20,000 copies of I.T. Kai. We churned out the joke book simply because Mr Li has been the centre of discussion among the Hong Kong people, said one of the publishing house editors, who refused to be identified. The publication is also a continuation of the good res-ponse stemming from Silly Old Tung, he added. We are not worried about being sued. What we hope to accomplish is to stir up light-hearted discussion concerning social issues among the public and bring them a bit of laughter. Richard Li could not be reached for comment yesterday. 15 March 2001 / 01:06 AM hk-imail.singtao.com
