Mr. Tsujimura said 3G is being planned for the U.S. by AT&T Wireless by the end of 2002 or 2003, using NTT DoCoMo technology.

This is the most interesting line of the whole story... AWE will be using DOCOMOs WCDMA by 2002 or 2003.... This is the same AWE that took pains to note that WCDMA didn't really have anything to do with Qualcomms technology except for the similar acronym (which the press swallowed hook, line, and sinker...). The fact that NEC and Misubishi who are providing handsets for the DOCOMO system think otherwise is obviously non-germane to the subject...

No wonder why NXTL is publicly mocking AWE for their serpentine path to 3G!! Let's go from TDMA, to GPRS, to i Mode, and then to WCDMA. I can't even figure out where EDGE will be introduced. NOK can't wait to get their hands on this project. No one else in the world is going to be stupid enough to lay out this tangled infrastructure mess. That will give them another 2 years of exclusivity for ATT before they get to WCDMA.

All this and they will have done nothing to increase voice capacity or provide anything close to 3G speeds.
