Disney Begins Firing About 1,000 Workers Jun 8 3:16pm ET LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The Walt Disney Co. on Friday began handing out pink slips to the first of nearly 1,000 employees it will lay off as part of a previously announced plan to trim 4,000 jobs, or 3 percent, from its global work force. A company spokesman for Burbank, California-based Disney said just over 3,000 employees took a voluntary severance package that had been offered by the company, and the majority of layoffs will occur between now and the end of July. The job cuts will come from all Disney operations worldwide. However, Walt Disney World in Florida will reportedly feel the brunt of the losses, with some 1,200 people expected to leave its operations, including those who opted for the voluntary package. Roughly 200 staff positions will be trimmed at the Disneyland theme park in Southern California, according to reports. The Disney spokesman declined to detail the location and exact number of the layoffs, saying they would come "across the board." Other Disney operations include the movie studio and its animation group in Burbank, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, and the ABC television network, which has offices and bureaus around the world. In March Disney said it would trim its 120,000-member work force in the face of a weak economy that had already hurt the company's advertising sales within its media division and threatened summer tourism at its theme parks. At that time, Disney said it expected to save as much as $350 million to $400 million and hoped to have the job cuts completed by mid-summer. Disney shares were off 38 cents, or 1.2 percent, at $31.78 by mid-afternoon on the New York Stock Exchange amid a broad decline that saw the Dow Jones industrial average off 146 points, or 1.3 percent, at roughly 10,944.
