It also is often one of the worst things you can do for the poor. Why? The poor need jobs, and aren't able on a small amount, able to invest it and create jobs.

I wasn't talking only about the poor......I meant anything that benefits the common good whether that is state-owned universities to planting trees on blvds.

As for the poor, I would want sufficient monies set aside for them to guarantee minimal food and shelter. And I agree that job training is a good approach and any other assistance that can get people weaned from their gov't dependency. Further, except in cases of illness or special circumstances, I would want to place a time limit on the shelter aspect of the assistance. I think the Clinton administration has an excellent record of successfully reducing the welfare doles by getting people employed.....particularly in your home state.

But bottom line, there is no reason for a society as wealthy as this one to have people going hungry at night. We are only as good as our least member.
