Freetel Enters Indonesian CDMA Market

Korea Telecom Freetel, the nation's second largest mobile phone operator, signed a contract
with Indonesia's largest cellular phone operator Komselindo Co. to supply code division
multiple access (CDMA) infrastructure and business consulting services.

``The contract reflects our technological superiority in the CDMA sector,'' said Freetel's Lee
Yong-kyung. ``We plan to export our CDMA technology to the Asian market over the next
three to four years.''

The contract comes in conjunction with a flurry of pushes into the global market. KT Freetel
has provided its technology and workforce to firms in Australia and Hong Kong helping them
to establish a network infrastructure and to perfect additional services.

Under the agreement, KT Freetel will supply a 18.2 billion won worth of consulting services,
including mobile phone marketing and customer relationship management, over the next
three months.

It will dispatch its consulting team to Indonesia this month. Starting in April it will install its own
telecom network designing and operating program, Netspider, with the aim of optimizing
overall business flows.

Komselindo, which has offered cellular phone service since 1995, is currently facing difficulty
with fewer-than-anticipated mobile phone subscribers. That is due to a lack of infrastructure
and marketing, a KT Freetel official said.

Jakarta-based Bimantara Group, Komselindo's largest shareholder, plans to attract 330,000
new subscribers by next year with an investment of 66 billion won, in line with KT Freetel's
advise.

Ben:

User growth rates (again) from that article:

The network, once opened, is to be expanded to attract 17 million subscribers by 2002 and 20 million by 2003, according to the Chinese firm.

By 2004, Chinese CDMA users are expected to grow to 59.5 million, the value of the equipment market is to rise to $5.3 billion with the sales of handsets increasing to 42.80 million units," said an official.

This implies expansion to 17 million by the end of 2002 (in line with the 10 million/year cited several times already)
only 3 million adds in 2003, then 40 million adds in 2004. The 60 million by 2004 certainly assumes an acceleration of the 10 million/year rate. I guess we won't know until it's done, but it sure puts some wide bands on QCOM's potential revenue growth over the next few years from the China market.
