Why would the investor trail 2 month stops? Is that typical?

No, that wouldn't be typical. Most investors just ride things up, and frequently too far back down, and I am not trying to be smart, cute, cynical, condescending, funny, sad, or indifferent.

There's many approaches to exiting positions - the right one is going to depend on the investors time frame. For the long long term investor, IMO its critical that they learn how to detect the end of a major trend.

Of course, they should also know how to define the beginning of a new trend (up, I am assuming for most people) as this will prevent them from buying false bottoms!
