Obviously, we can discuss God without believing in God. Your sentence: "Rather, it was an attempt to explain why God would have let things go so far before stopping him" sounded like a sharing of personal belief--and this explains my comment. Anyhow, I am glad to know my assumption was correct.

Being wedded to primitive and visceral emotional aspects has nothing to do with the doctrine of Original Sin. When you refer to the Doctrine of Original Sin, are you referring to the Book of Genesis, or to something else?

I guess my confusion comes from your use of "underlying truth". I don't know if you mean a reason, or a justification--or an ultimate principle..

It seems to me that it would be difficult to believe in the biblical Original Sin without believing in the general mythos in which it is couched.
