Weekly Jobless Claims Higher Than Expected
Four-Week Average Highest Since Mid-1998

Reuters

WASHINGTON (March 15) - The number of people signing up for first-time unemployment benefits during the last four weeks rose to its highest level in more than 2-1/2 years, the government said on Thursday in a report suggesting the labor market may be easing.

The widely watched four-week moving average of initial claims rose to 364,250 in the March 10 week from 356,500 in the prior week, the Labor Department said. That was the highest level since July 11, 1998, when claims were 366,500.

First-time claims, meanwhile were at 375,000 in the week ended March 10, unchanged from a revised 375,000 in the previous week. Jobless claims were originally reported at 370,000 for the week ending March 3.

First-time claims were above expectations from Wall Street economists who had estimated new claims totaled 364,000.
