Not the latest thinking; they were interbred out of existence. There were no genetic barriers to interbreeding so those genes were out competed by others and simply have a smaller representation nowadays. Poor Gerard Depardieu, he seems to have quite a few of them.

Ah! That would be Genesis, then. It is the first book in the Old Testament, and it tells two basic myths of human beginnings. It also re-tells an interesting story about a flood.
