Personally, I would take it one step further and have a pay as you go system that would allow one to purchase *one* show at a time.

We have that now. It's called Pay-per-View. DirecTV (satellite) has probably 50 channels of it. Personally, I hate it. I'd rather pay a flat rate and not have to know in advance whether I'm going to like a given program or movie well enough to want to watch it all the way through. I also don't like the idea of having to wonder if I'm going over budget every time I turn on the TV.
