The brokers have to keep people guessing so they can unload stocks after hours. The futures are part of the overall manipulation tool kit that the big houses have created to steer the sheep around. After hours trading is another great one. Easy to buy up a few thousand shares of a stock "pre-market" and people actually believe someone is buying the stock other than the MM's themselves.

If the stock market is an example of how business should be run we are screwed big time.
