Hi Dave,

Re. the VIX, 35 is often spoken of on CNBC as the the level of fear that signals a bottom. Historically, the number is much higher, closer to 55 or 60.

The question in my mind, though, is the shape of the bottom. A v-bottom, one marked by that much sought-after capitulation, would show a very high spike in the VIX. But there are u-bottoms and L-bottoms as well, in which the VIX may never spike that high and the market essentially drags its sorry butt along the bottom for some time.
