But lets say they make $1 a year or a bond pays you $1 a year, do you buy shares and hope management doesn't piss your money away? Or buy the bond which they are obligated to pay coupons on??

Of course the shares aren't worthless if they're making money, someone would do an LBO or whatever [ie. turn it into a bond] if it got cheap enough. But your assertion that SUNW is priced as if it won't grow makes no sense.. what did they make .63 for the year? Besides, there's a chance they could be losing money hand over fist before this is over.
