That one is not true. Joe Kennedy was furious with the commanding officer that sponsored that suicide mission. You may recall that Joe Junior's final flight (and my recollection of specifics on the nature of the target is spotty so I'd welcome further clarification) involved an attack against a hardened German position in Norway. It may have been part of the German war effort to produce heavy water or perhaps it was a part of their submarine production effort, my memory fails me now.

In any case, the flight's distance was beyond that which permitted the plane to return and Joe Junior's proposed method of recovery was to bail out over the sea and be recovered by naval rescue. In all, it was a mission plan that was FUBAR from the get go. Joe Senior was rightly justified in castigating the commanding officer that came up with this kamikazi mission.

It is the basest calumny to slander either the father or the man who died for his country on a mission of what they surely regarded as fundamental importance with almost no chance of success. I have no love for the current generation of Kennedys but you don't need to love them in order to admire their uncle's patriotism and bravery.
