An analogy is Broadway ticket prices. In the 1960s, you could buy a front row seat for $8-$10, and a back balcony seat for $1, with 4 or 5 price points in between. I saw a few shows on student rush for 75 cents.

Back then, you could send an airmail letter, or a first class letter, or a second class (unsealed, mind you) letter. Businesses could send third class mail. Those choices have disappeared, along with the rural trains which carried much of the slower mail and the twice a day delivery to residences. Broadway has just two prices ($85 and $70 are typical), and the USPS has just one for retail users.
