Hi daffodil,
Enjoyed your thread on margin calls a while back. I think you'll be quite happy with WinME on the DELL. I have run it on several machines and found it quite stable. The big complaint has been that it uses a large enough proportion of system resources to protect beginners that it constrains "power users". But this is a plus in the scenario you're describing. You can check out some recent articles from Fred Langa for more info.

When I get a new machine I install Norton Systemworks 2001, get all updates via Symantec live update; run Windoctor and correct any existing problems; go to windows update and install IE 5.5 SP1; go back to Windows update and install the remaining updates; install software (ie Office, quicken, etc.); check for updates on new software; run windoctor again (usually a whole slew of new errors); and then finally run Norton optimization wizard. The systems (including 2 DELL laptops and a DELL desktop) have all been very stable. Of course, after I run them for a couple weeks in case there are problems I would want Dell to fix (none so far), I either upgrade them to Win2K (have to reinstall application software) or re-format them and put on Win98SE.

I do not use AOL (that "power user" thing again), but have installed AOL 6.0B for a couple other people (after doing the previous) and it has been quite stable. I have found IE 5.5 SP1 to be a rock solid browser; fast, and with almost no Web incompatibilities; under Win2K, Win98SE, and WinME. However, all my machines are middle of the road (PII266 - PIII800) with a minimum of 128 MEG RAM and DSL or cable modem. In your case, with AOL 6, you might want to use its Netscape as your browser (no experience here with them). In that case, you might feel tempted to skip the IE 5.5 SP1 update, however, I believe (but don't know) that Microsoft slipstreams OS fixes/enhancements through the IE updates so I would do it anyway. Hope this helps.
