REH, there are both fundamental and technical reasons. From a fundamental point of view, two years ago the bu$$ was "selling" promises, now they are delivering actual earnings. Promises, for one reason or another are more valued in the market (at least the market of two years ago) than actual earnings. Second, the overall market valuations a year ago were twice as high (fo most stocks) that they are today, and were probably an aberation.

From a technical point of view, the major support was in the $50 to $60 area and like a baby, stocks always come back to mommy where it is comfortable (old support areas).
