KOREAN INSTITUTE RECEIVES US$100 MLN IN ROYALTY SHARING FROM QUALCOMM
SEOUL, Mar 16, 2001 (AsiaPulse via COMTEX) -- The Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) said Friday it has received US$100.25 million from Qualcomm Inc. in royalty sharing for the period of from 1996 to 2000.

In December, the International Court of Arbitration ruled that the U.S. firm had to share additional royalties on sales of its wireless technology in Korea with ETRI.

ETRI and Qualcomm worked together in 1992 to commercialize the latter's service technology in code division multiple access (CDMA) in Korea.

They agreed that ETRI should receive 20 percent of royalties collected in the Korean market for 13 years from Qualcomm.

But Qualcomm, based on its own interpretation of the agreement, excluded royalties from personal communications services based on the same CDMA technology. As a result ETRI received only 11 percent of the royalties Qualcomm collected in Korea.

"The royalties ETRI has now collected will partially balance out the great amount of royalties local telecommunications companies had to pay to Qualcomm and form a new order in CDMA royalty payment systems," said Chung Seon-jong, head of the Korean institute.
