I dunno, the older I get the more cynical I get. After decades of watching Presidents and studying history and politics, I think the people who are in charge of the government just let the President think he's in charge. He's kept isolated from the real world, the only thing he knows is what they tell him. The only choices he gets to make are from a set of choices they give him, and the attractiveness of the choices is carefully crafted to suit the competing interests within the administration. They come into the office with the belief that they can initiate things, but they get bogged down by reality. Watch what happens to them when their terms of office are over. They become totally superfluous.
