Labor thugs economize with non-union labor:

America's Sweatshop

The AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington, D.C. has been undergoing extensive interior and exterior refurbishment over the past 18 months. And given that it is the AFL-CIO building, you'd assume the big laborites used all-union help.

But apparently the AFL-CIO wasn't looking for the union label as diligently as it expects other contractors to look. On several occasions, the union has hired non-union electrical and construction help. "Only if they couldn't find a local union shop to do it," says an in-house source. "But it did save us some money." If anyone knows about the high cost of union help, it's the AFL-CIO.

flap,

GO BEARCATS! This was 7th straight first round win in NCAA Tournaments and Bob Huggins' 300th win in 12 seasons at Cincy. He's not yet Woodin, but he'll be near the top before he's thru. Unless they discover some trifling with rules, ala Tarq the Shark formerly of UNLV and now Fresno State. I certainly hope not.

I'm one of those non-working underclass people you mentioned, but not by choice. I am unemployed at the moment. I've been unemployed for 10 of the last 15 weeks as a result of a layoff due to a "down-sizing" after 23 years with one company. As an aside, the down-sizing started in 1999 after almost a year's notice that it might happen. The company is the largest independent in it's field in the world, Forbes 500 etc. This is in a county that consistently ranks in the top 3 in unemployment in CA. Mostly agriculture and even at the height of the season, we're lucky to see single-digit % unemployment. At worst it approaches 20% in the off-season.

Job hunting is a bitch when one hasn't had to for over 33 years and is bumping up against 60. I am beginning to feel victimized; where's the nearest DemoLib? I want a union for the unemployed - Non-Workers of the World unite!

Btw, I also don't worship Rush. I've only listened to his show twice since the "down-sizing" and then not all the way thru. But he has made a lot of valid points over the years.

Chas

res-<I heard on the radio the other day that the right wing of the Republican Party is represented by a large number of people who are termed "non-workers and under-achievers."

Don't believe everything you hear flap, Some of Rush's greatest fans are policemen, firefighters, construction workers and truck drivers. My best friend is a home builder, and practically every time I visit his job site one of the subs is playing Rush on the radio. The demographics of a typical Rush fan are anything but what you describe.

Additionally, your ignorance regarding who you spend so much time arguing with is profound. Name me one conservative on these threads who doesn't work, or stay home and help raise children. (which I consider some of the most valuable work anyone can do)?

On the other hand, let's look at the people who inhabit the areas of the country Gore won. Inner cities and places around academia where elitists dominate.

You're no better than anyone else just because you receive a union paycheck flap. (or once did)

Michael
