Ek, when one of the companies I respect the most like Amat starts laying off...yes I think buying puts makes sense.
>SANTA CLARA, California, Mar 15, 2001 (AP WorldStream via COMTEX) -- Applied Materials Inc., the world's largest manufacturer of chip-making equipment, is offering severance packages to up to 1,000 employees as part of a cost-cutting effort.

Applied Materials said Thursday its "voluntary separation plan" mostly would be offered to workers in Santa Clara and in Austin, Texas. The company had 22,000 employees as of Jan. 28.

Last month, Applied Materials warned it was being pinched as the U.S. economic downturn hurt its customers, the manufacturers of computer processors. Applied Materials said then it would reduce its temporary work force, defer raises and shut down for five days this quarter.

"However, the continued slowdown in demand for semiconductor equipment requires further action by the company," the company said in Thursday's statement.

Shares of Applied Materials fell dlrs 2.06, more than 4 percent, to dlrs 46.13 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
