Agreed. No need for a climatic washout event. The shorter corrections can be like that, but this is something different I am quite sure.

When the bottom comes there will be nobody talking about bottoms or even suggesting that we buy equities.

It's funny, I'd mentioned the idea of capitulation here earlier, with the idea being that we may well not get that kind of event. It's too bad, as capitulation would be an easy, emotionally-satisfying signal of a bottom. But the market isn't likely to give this to us. I think Allan's quite right: it'll be a long while till things heal.

You had mentioned investor psychology in your last post to me. I found this article, written by a psychologist and trader, which addresses the emotional fallout of traders as the market has turned and gives some wonderful suggestions for moving on:
