I'd strongly suggest that people on this thread (hi Earlie) should read Herb Greenberg's comments on IBM today.

Maybe this explains IBM, from our boys at Fechtor Detwiler: "In the last few days we’ve picked-up some information out of IBM. From our friends intimate with IBM Microelectronics, we’re hearing that “Cisco has cancelled ASIC orders for the foreseeable future”. Supposedly, IBM warned Cisco that any cancellations would drop them out of “cue”, pushing out any possible upside for up to six months. Our sources tell us that up until now, IBM has been running the Vermont fab at near capacity as internal demand for chips supporting the recently revamped RS6000 server remains relatively strong.

"However, the word we’re hearing from contacts intimate with IBM’s contract manufacturing activities depict bleaker business conditions. In particular, we’re hearing current production of the RS6000 servers has maintained a strong pace, but future build schedules have been reduced by some 15%-20%. Our sources have also commented that “E Server and RAID business is off substantially”.

Thanks to Justin for pointing out to me the latest from Merrill Lynch's Tom Kraemer on IBM, which he downgraded in December, "on our belief that systems integration contracts would not hold up in a weakening environment. That belief appears to have been confirmed as Computer Sciences negatively pre-announced this morning."

Kraemer added: "We have spoken with the CIOs at a number of large financial services corporations and they indicated they have started to slow their purchases of mainframe MIPS. We believe this is materially important as many investors have looked at the mainframe product cycle for justification to stay with IBM." hg

Re Pearly, no offense meant

Wot? Are you suggesting I have caught a dose of "foot in mouth" disease or something -g-

ananova.com

BTW, I think it could tank the market aka 1929, but at the moment I am assuming it won't.

I have just enough shorts and poots that would keep my account level pegging into a crash. (if everyone paid up -g-) To be bearish further then that at the moment would not be fearing Trading Range, and that, statistically speaking, is the more likely event. Probabilities above 90% IMHO. Trading range has not been killed, and somehow I feel the stage is being set for an ultra taunt from somewhere. -g-

Now, of course I had not studied the math on the last 5 minute volume on IBM. You state the case clearly.

However, lets think in a non linear math style for a moment. Suppose an institution wanted to see IBM close above $90 (I didn't realize it had fallen so much BTW <nfg> I don't have it shorted or pooted :-(. What would happen if they fired off , say, a couple of 20k BUY blocks a minute or two apart? Are you suggesting even for a moment the CRAZY idea that CLOWNS DO NOT EXIST? Has "foot in mouth" disease already landed in the USA??

Wouldn't some I-don't-catch-falling-knives-the-bottom-is-nearly-in-i-got-fancy-software-that-can-tell-when-the
-big-boys-are-jumping-in-greenspan-will-cut-rates-on-tuesday type of chart chasing clowns be ready to buy???

Just a suggestion,
