I just read in the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible all of John 8, and it doesn't have the Jews proclaiming that Christ is "from the devil," but it does say that they ask, because he is claiming absolute primacy and exclusive relationship with God the Father, if he is a Samaritan and if he "has a demon," to which he replies, "I do not have a demon," and continues ranting about his exalted relationship with God, saying to them that "whoever keeps my word will never see death." He also says, "If I say I do not know Him, I would be a liar, like you."

Understandably, they are pissed and puzzled, and say, "Now we know you have a demon. Abraham died, and so did the prophets; yet you say, 'Whoever keeps my word will never taste death.' Are you greater than our father Abraham who died?" etc.

The Jews here are being rather polite, I'd say. They're basically saying, "You must be a Samaritan or a possessed person to be saying something so outlandish!" -- This is quite a different thing from Jesus's assigning all those Jews who refuse to embrace his rather self-important notions, to put it mildly, the status of descendants of the source of all evil in the Universe.

If you see my point!
