Perhaps all that bike riding has gotten you in shape to go for 10, 20, 30 minutes without breathing while you wait for medical assistance. You should be able to get any off-the-shelf seatbelt arrangement and with adequate 3rd party or dealer support, customize it for your body shape. If not, you could make an ADA claim if you are too big or small for your seatbelt and the dealer might have to reimburse you. Do you know this or are you speculating? It is your responsibility to notify the government rather than unilaterally ignore it. Yeah. Do you need to see copies of my correspondence with NHTSA? My correspondence with Acura? Would you like a link to the petition to NHTSA filed on behalf of fat people? How about the text of my Acura manual? It has some language admonishing owners not to make any alterations in the seat belt, even adding one of those plush harness covers, because it could mess up the delicate balance of their finely tuned mechanism and that would void any liability they might otherwise have had. Actually, Cosmic, our little discussion has caused me to check the status of the petition. After several years, there's been some recent action. Here's NHTSA's response to the petition. << U.S. Department of Transportation National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 400 Seventh St., S.W. Washington, D.C. 20590 Feb 28 2001 Dear Ms. Fisher: The purpose of this letter is to notify you that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has made a determination to grant your petition dated April 18, 2000, requesting the agency to revise FMVSS No. 209 to require vehicle manufacturers to provide seat belts that fit all passengers, not just those up to 215 lbs. Please note that the granting of this petition does not necessarily mean that this standard will be revised as requested. Rather the granting of this petition signifies that the agency believes that a further review of the issues raised in the petition appears to have merit. The determination of whether to issue a rule will be made in the course of the rulemaking proceeding, in accordance with statutory criteria. Sincerely, Stephen R. Kratzke Associate Administrator for Safety Performance Standards >>. I see very little reason to lock you up for it no matter how much you protest it. Of course, assuming any changes in the regulation result from the petition, that doesn't mean that the changes will help me. If they just order seat belts to be longer, that won't help me. If they order seat belt extenders to be made available, that would help me because it changes the angle of the shoulder harness. Cosmic, I don't want to protest anything and I'm not worried about being locked up. I just want the jerks who make these laws to quit being so cavalier about the safety of some of its citizens and enable me to drive safely. I don't think that's asking too much. And I didn't expect Cosmic Force to pile on. Karen
