Just reading SI and hearing CNBS there is mounting evidence that more and more people are shorting those days. Buying puts is also the equivalent of shorting. The specialist selling a put usually shorts the stock. At today IV levels it is very profitable for them. Option volume is relatively high.

Another play to stabilize a stock for example the WS houses sell large amounts of puts who then force the specialist to buy the stock. GS, MER and LEH were famous for that.
