Alternative Minimum Tax.. the real problem comes with the govt wanting their tax dollar in the year the option was exercised, not the year the gain/loss was realized. This stems from the fact I believe that these options were tied to employee benefits as far as I understand it. I spoke with an accountant on Friday who said you could have seen a huge tech/Dot Com fall coming just based on the large number of these stockholders who needed to unload their shares by year end. The idea would have been to short those companies that had given the largest % of these options to their employees. Damn... I wish he'd told me that in September.
