Hi Wayne, I've never heard of this type of tax regulation in Canada but you never know. Check with your accountant.

Although I've had the government send me tax bills for amounts that they think my new company MIGHT make and I just sit there laughing ... then I call my accountant and she takes care of it. She says it's a bunch of bull and you shouldn't pay a tax bill just because somebody at Revenue Canada decides to do some creative accounting based on no facts at all. There are no stock options involved with the tax bills the government sends me.

Lola:)

Wayne and Lola. A good thread to bookmark is this one.

Subject 33434

Also any Canadian that makes numerous trades, should be familiar with these. It ain't pretty. Seems if your main intent trading stocks is to profit from the trades, you are a trader, and capital gains do not apply. That I guess is opposed to an "investor" who maybe never sells anything? Sort of, depends on your intent, the number of trades, the length of time a security is held, the amount of time spent on research, and on and on and on....

As far as how employee stock options are treated, go here:

Be prepared for a lot of reading, and if you're like me, a lot head scratching, as nothing is just plain cut and dry black and white.
