As you know, I am reading about the Great Depression now

Actually, I didn't know, I have been barely skimming the Clown thread lately. I did notice you tossing a very impressive barrage of info at the mad doc recently. -g-

I know that book:

The most important thing I remember was that many price inflations often began of their own accord, before governments and banks began to monetize them. Another thing I gleaned from it was that the increase in overall wealth has made the effects of periodic depressions much less painful. I had not been aware that, during periods of distress, people dug up corpses for food. Ugh! Also, the obvious flaw in the gold standard was imprinted on me in reading that book - the fact that the supply of gold is subject to massive increases at times (like with the discovery of the America). The worst part of that book, IMHO, was the end where he makes his conclusions.
