Art, the "missile defense shield" is a dead issue. News sources report that the defense missiles won't be ready until 2006 so there is little advantage to ready sites at this time. Not to mention the fact that if China ever decided to attack the U.S. we have enough missiles to kill every one of their billion+ citizens several times over.

If any country on Earth objects to the U.S. building an anti-missile system, the only logical explanation for this would be if they have intentions of attacking us. Which is all the more reason to build a defensive system.

IMHO, it is a wonder that anyone gets print space for this kind of article. I have no doubt that the Chinese know what's actually going on and that they consider GWB's proposals to be -- roughly translated -- "meaningless noise". Whatever the U.S. does to protect its citizens will be respected by the world at large. If China chooses to dislike this effort, so be it. They might choose to dislike the U.S. for a thousand other reasons.

What really gets me is that GWB's administration put the matter out for bids. I mean ... there was no reason why we couldn't have built the system in secret, deployed it and then told the world that we had it.

But no ... GWB risked alienating parts of the world by pre-announcing our actions five years ahead of their time. IMHO, the correct word for describing this kind of behavior is ... "dumb".
