My personal poll of friends and colleages simply amyazes me! They simply don't look because they don't want to. One, an MD around 41, told me during late '00 and early '01 that he simply tossed his mutual fund statements in the trash w/o opening them, since he knew it was going to be bad and he was in for the long haul. He finally had to look as he was buying a home and the mortgage company wanted an actual up to date statement, not his estimate. Down 25% (not really all that bad, considering it could have been well over 50% with the "right mix"). Another, age 72 ,a very successful businessman who is well situated financially dropped $106K in a tech and telecomm mutual fund in........March '00! While he tended to check the prices of his stock holdings in the paper, he forgot about the mutual fund until early this year. 35K. I'm 100% cash right now. Up a thundering +2.5% net YTD. You won't be seeing me on Squawkbox anytime soon.....
