(I'm a recent escapee from Silicon Valley). Obviously this kind of thing happened to only a tiny minority of the general population. But it is, in my view, a harbinger of the tough times to come. The stock market was the economy, profoundly and at depth. Its rise fed the economic good times and its fall will hold the economy down for some time to come.
