BEAR WARNING: $60 TO $90 BILLION OF INCOME TAX PAYMENTS DUE

U.S. income taxes are due literally just four weeks from today. The likely impact on stocks, given the slump in cash takeovers, will not be pretty. Each of the past three years the stock market sold off starting in mid-April and did not bottom until mid- or late May. 1997 was the last time there was no April sell-off.

The reason for the recent down Aprils was the sale of stock to pay income taxes. This year, at least $60 billion to perhaps as much as $90 billion of shares will be sold to pay income taxes. In either of these cases, this is enough to drive stock prices lots lower over the near term.

Last year, our estimate was that about $85 billion in shares were sold in April 2000 to pay taxes, perhaps 50% more than the amount sold in 1999, which likely was also 50% or so higher than in 1998.

Parenthetically, April and January have been the two best months for mutual fund inflows. Obviously, mutual fund flows since 1997 are not as important as tax payments for April performance. The stock market was up each and every April and May between 1994 and 1997.
